About this story

Kaia is the loudest girl in Juniper Valley, and every morning Echo, her very best friend, answers her “Hello!” from the mountain. After the first big snow, Echo goes silent. A snowy owl explains that fresh snow wraps up sounds like a blanket. When Kaia stands very still, she hears tiny sounds, and then a faint “Meh” from a baby goat stuck in a snowdrift. She digs it out and uses her big voice to call its mother. In the evening, the wind clears the snow and Echo comes back.

What children can explore

  • How an echo works, and why fresh snow makes the world quieter
  • Being still and listening can help you notice what others need
  • A big voice and a quiet moment both have their place

Talk about it after reading

  1. Why couldn’t Kaia hear Echo after the snow?
  2. How did being quiet help Kaia find the baby goat?
  3. If you stay very still right now, what small sounds can you hear?
